1. Her maiden name was Norma Jean Mortenson.

2. Her father was absent all her life.

3. Her grandmother was admitted to a mental health hospital on August 4, 1927. Marilyn died 35 years and a day later, on August 5th.

The fear of going insane, like her grandmother and mother were/would haunt her all her life.

4. She stuttered occasionally all of her life.

5. She was sent to an orphanage when she was nine years old.

The reason she was sent to an orphanage was that her mother was hospitalized for mental health problems. Her mother's problems were so severe that she had to spend the rest of her life in a mental health facility.

6. She married her first husband, Jim Dougherty when she was only sixteen years old. The marriage lasted four years.

7. This is how the stage name Marilyn Monroe came about ...

The stage name Marilyn Monroe was developed with the help of Ben Lyon, head of the youth department at Fox Studios.

The name Marilyn was chosen because he said to her: "You are a Marilyn to me" - it can be that simple sometimes. Then she asked if she could use her grandmother's last name, Monroe. And so the name finally came about: Marilyn Monroe.

In 1950 she had a minor nose job, an operation that lifted her nose and placed some cartilage in her jaw to strengthen her jawline.
